Learning about an old building called the Majestic Ballroom led me to an interesting link between Luton and another interest of mine – the Fab Four.
Gertrude Morris has been an impressive, independent pianist, that lived in Luton until her death, in 1970. She performed in different venues and composed about 20 tunes herself and had them published.
Built, owned and operated by local born filmmaker Justin Doherty, The Bear Club opened its doors in September 2014, and became quickly one of the top 25 jazz clubs in the world.
Luton Music Club was founded in 1946 and has presented over the years a series of public concerts and performances. It is recognised as one of the leading voluntary promoters of professional chamber music in the UK.
From the late 1970’s to the mid 1980’s Luton had a vibrant Punk scene. Youths with multi-coloured hairdos and worn leather jackets congregated in St George’s Square and attended Luton's early Carnival, Marsh Farm Festivals and the Grapevine or Baron of Beef pubs in the town centre.
From becoming a trombonist in the Luton Red Cross Silver Prize Band, to performing at Grand Theatre and, finally, being a resident musician on cruise ships, Sindey Butcher's passion for music transformed in a lifetime career.
In response to the COVID-19 crisis, the Arts and Culture Projects team in the University of Bedfordshire implemented The Heritage Impact Accelerator, that offers a 10-month incubator programme.
