60 George Street

Address : 60 George Street, Luton

Grid Reference : TL0909621277

Site Status : Draft Local List

Conservation Area : This is in the Town Centre conservation area

Site Description : A Thurston photograph from c.1890 shows the building to be Victorian. It was formerly Capital & Counties Bank, before becoming Lloyds Bank some time between 1915 and 1925. The entire George Street frontage has a ground, first and second floor. However, an early photo shows that the right half of the building (i.e. the half furthest from the corner, near to the cash point) was originally only two storeys. The third storey was added in the summer of 1951. The Ground floor was originally a shop and had large windows, virtually floor to ceiling, on both the George St and Bute St frontages.

Site Location (OS map and aerial view)

A red marker shows the site's location on the map and aerial view below. Use the slider controls or +/- buttons to zoom in and out, or click and drag the map or aerial view to move around.

To view street level photographs using Google Street View, drag the little orange figure (top left in the aerial view) onto one of the roads. To exit Street View, click the X in the top right corner. NB - when in Street View the red marker's position can be less accurate and may not always point to the correct building. You can blame Google for that, not us!
