Former ’Waterstones’ building

Address : 36 George Street, Luton

Grid Reference : TL0916821210

Site Status : Draft Local List

Conservation Area : This is in the Town Centre conservation area

Site Description : Built around the beginning of the 20th century on the site of the former Bell Inn, and the Bell Commercial Hotel with deeds for property on the land dating back as far as 1641. The original building is likely to have been rebuilt by John William Green following his purchase of the original Bell Hotel in 1897. The name The Bell occupying a stone pediment on the front of the building denotes its original use as a hotel. Since the 1920s the premises have mostly been in retail use: with the original facade remaining above fascia level.

Site Location (OS map and aerial view)

A red marker shows the site's location on the map and aerial view below. Use the slider controls or +/- buttons to zoom in and out, or click and drag the map or aerial view to move around.

To view street level photographs using Google Street View, drag the little orange figure (top left in the aerial view) onto one of the roads. To exit Street View, click the X in the top right corner. NB - when in Street View the red marker's position can be less accurate and may not always point to the correct building. You can blame Google for that, not us!
