Former Vyse’s Hat Factory

Address : 47-53 Bute Street, Luton

Grid Reference : TL0916721419

Site Status : Draft Local List

Conservation Area : This is in the Plaiters Lea conservation area

Site Description : Formerly Vyse's Hat Factory - Exists on 1880s map. The building eventually became the T.S.B. bank and is now a general store. The 'V' on the building can be seen between the first, second and third floor central windows. The art deco style ornamentation points to a 1930s date as the original factory was rebuilt following a disastrous fire in 1930. The form of the ground floor is difficult to discern due to recent refurbishment but it certainly conformed to type with paired entrances and two large windows with side access.

To view street level photographs using Google Street View, drag the little orange figure (top left in the aerial view) onto one of the roads. To exit Street View, click the X in the top right corner. NB - when in Street View the red marker's position can be less accurate and may not always point to the correct building. You can blame Google for that, not us!
